Irish Cement to cut 130 jobs at its two plants

Barry Duggan

UP to 130 employees of Irish Cement are set to lose their jobs at its plants in Limerick and Meath.

In Castlemungret, Limerick, 70 staff are to be let go while it is understood that another 60 will lose their jobs at Platin in Meath.

A company spokesperson blamed "continuing deterioration in market conditions and a sustained decline in the demand for cement products" for the job losses.

"Discussions are to commence immediately with a view to having the necessary changes implemented later in 2010," the spokesperson said.

SIPTU's Karan O'Loughlin said the cuts came "on the back of a 30pc reduction in the workforce last year and a series of temporary lay-offs".
