IRISH bomb disposal experts are to take a lead role in a Brussels conference on how to deal with home made bombs or improvised explosive devices (IEDs) which have caused many casualties in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Ordnance officers from the Defence Forces will address the conference which is being held under the Irish Presidency in early March and will look at how to combat the IED threat into the future.
The ‘Resilient Threat Management’ conference will also be attended by experts from the Guardia Civil, FBI, European Defence Agency, NATO, Europol, and the Gardai.
The Irish Defence Forces are seen as being among the best in the world in bomb disposal because of their experience at home during the Troubles, in Lebanon, Afghanistan and other missions abroad.
