The incident occurred shortly before 5am in the Broward area of Florida on Saturday, police said.

It's reported that the victim was walking with two friends - also from Ireland - from a bar back to their hotel when he was struck by black BMW SUV.

The deceased was rushed to the nearby Broward Health Medical Centre by North Lauderdale Fire Resue. However, he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

The victim's name has not been released by police yet - but sources have told independent.ie the victim's name is Martin O'Connor.

It's believed he is from Roscommon.

"The victim was with two of his friends of the time. They were coming from a bar and going back to their hotel when they were involved in a hit-and-run.

"The individual driving the car fled from the scene.

"A man has been arrested in connection to the incident," an official in Broward County Sheriff's Department told independent.ie.

Neither of Mr O'Connor's friends sustained any injury following the incident.

A man, named locally as Richard Jennings, was arrested at his home in Hollywood on the charge of leaving the scene of an accident causing death.

It is understood the accused's black BMW car was damaged following the collision. This was reported to police who were investigating the incident.
