Ireland's oldest mayor used his casting vote tonight to pull a county council back from the brink.

A Fianna Fail councillor didn't turn up for the budget vote at Donegal County Council - leaving Fine Gael/Labour and independents tied 14-votes each with Sinn Fein and Fianna Fail.

Cllr Ian McGarvey, who is 82, used his casting vote to pass the budge proposals.

Sinn Fein councillor Jack Murray slammed the outcome as 'farcical'.
