THE Irish Independent has relaunched its website with a completely new design to give users more video, pictures and social features and reduced clutter.
The redesign will see news updated more quickly and more often. It will also allow easier navigation and better sharing of stories with family and friends.
"The enhanced site represents another step in the digital evolution at INM," said Irish Independent editor Stephen Rae. "It allows for greater sharing, more interaction with users and far more image driven content and video which will consolidate Independent's position as Ireland's no.1 online news provider."
Independent.ie has been the leading news web site in Ireland for more than six months, according to audited figures, with the number of users showing massive year-on-year growth.
The new design reflects significant input from readers, who provided us with key insights and feedback following user research and studies of emerging consumption trends that we conducted in 2012.
The site has been revamped as part of Independent News & Media Plc’s strategy to improve the digital offering of all INM titles.
As part of this strategy, digital editors and reporters have been moved into the newsroom of the Irish Independent and take part in daily editorial meetings. The paper has hired staff and moved reporters into the digital unit.
"We've more exciting plans in the pipeline, driven by a smart, energetic and young newsroom," Mr Rae said
The new design will deliver an improved news section which features all the latest local, national, world news and opinion, and a rich injection of up-to-date video and images throughout the new layout, will allow you to engage with and share the news as it happens on Independent.ie. Live blogs, up-to-the-minute reports and coverage of high-profile sporting events are all included in the re-designed sports section.
'We're very excited about re-launching our digital publishing franchise on a completely new platform' says Ian Byrne, CEO of Independent Digital. 'We are proud of the new design which reflects our core brand attributes, in a fresh, modern and user friendly way.'
There will also be opinion, analysis, discussion and blogs from top journalists such as Charlie Weston in the revamped business section, keeping readers informed about Irish and global business news that is updated in real-time.
Readers will also be able to delve into the new entertainment and lifestyle sections to view engaging and interactive videos, passionate debate and advice.
Patrick Lenehan, Chief Technology Officer, says ‘We’re really excited to re-launch Independent.ie and our other 17 local news websites to our global audience. We worked hard with our technology partners to create and deliver a great product and we are delighted with the slick new user interface and in particular, what we expect will be a revolution in social media engagement across all platforms. All that’s left to do is to start sharing.’
