FORMER rugby star Keith Wood flicked the switch on a new superfast fibre broadband in Co Clare.

Wood, who played on the 1997 and 2001 Lions tours, joined staff from Eircom to officially turn on the new eFibre service at Market Square in Ennis.

The launch is part of a nationwide rollout which will allow homes to enjoy broadband speeds of up to 70MB. It has already been launched in 32 communities around the country.

A spokeswoman for Eircom said eFibre will allow all the members of the household be online on multiple devices at the same time and still provide speedy access.

Kevin White, managing director of Eircom Consumer, said: “It offers customers superfast fibre broadband at competitive prices.”

Mr White said they would be able to offer customers ‘triple play’ packages with fibre broadband, homephones and mobile access. They were also moving towards ‘quad-play’ packages which would also offer television channels.

Existing broadband customers will now be able to get a free upgrade to eFibre in Ennis.

The fibre broadband and home phone package will cost from €40 a month.
