A DISSIDENT republican group in Co Fermanagh calling itself the Continuity IRA is believed to be behind the latest attempt to destroy the former Quinn group headquarters.

The attack involving an attempt to detonate a stolen diesel tanker was the most serious in a series of incidents in the past three years since the group was dissolved and taken into ownership of the Aventas Group.

The tanker failed to explode after the attackers set fire to the cab of the lorry, which was reversed up to the reception area of the group's headquarters at Derrylin last Thursday night. The fire was brought under control before the fuel in the tanker exploded but posed a considerable threat to the lives of fire brigade members and police.

The group believed responsible consists of a handful of people based in the Fermanagh-Cavan area, according to gardai. No claim was made, but gardai believe those responsible are the remains of the former Provisional IRA brigade in the Border area.

Aventas described the incident as "moronic" and said it was just the latest in a campaign of sabotage the company had endured.
