The investigation has been launched after attempts by an external source to hack into the Garda Síochána IT system.

This forced gardaí to temporarily shut down several of their systems.

It remains unclear who was behind the attack on systems which contain highly sensitive data in relation to both open investigations, to information on staff and members of the public.

Gardaí said the attack was carried out using a new strain of malware which was previously unseen by their IT security team.

In a statement, An Garda Síochána said: "(After the threat was recognised) heightened security procedures were implemented and standard protocols were enforced across all Garda ICT environments to limit any effect on our systems.

"Working with security experts the threat was identified and an appropriate solution was implemented across all Garda Siochana ICT systems."

They also said that there was no compromise of data during the attack and they are continuing their investigation into the incident.
