Investigation after woman attacked in South Dublin

Victim’s screams alerted passers-by

A woman in her early 20’s was punched and dragged to the ground in an unprovoked attack in Rathmines in Dublin early this morning.

The 22-year-old victim was walking on Effra Road when she was jumped on from behind.

The incident happened at 12.30am on the residential street.

During the attack the woman was punched to the pavement but her screams alerted others in the area who came to her assistance.

A description of the attacker was circulated to local garda units and a 49-year-old man was later arrested.

He is currently being questioned at Terenure garda station where he can be held for 24 hours.

The victim was taken to hospital as a precaution.

While her physical injuries were thought not to be serious she is said to be shocked and traumatised after the attack.
