Fianna Fail senator Ivor Callely's €80,000 expenses claims will be investigated by the Seanad's in-house watchdog, the Select Committee on Members' Interests of Seanad Eireann.
The committee has seven members and is chaired by Fianna Fail senator Pat Moylan, the Cathaoirleach of the Seanad.
The government parties enjoy a majority on the committee as Mr Moylan is joined by Fianna Fail's Camillus Glynn and Denis O'Donovan and the Green Party's Dan Boyle.
The opposition parties are represented by Fine Gael's Frances Fitzgerald, the Labour Party's Alex White and the independent Joe O'Toole. All three are the leaders of their respective groups in the Seanad.
