A HARROWING account by Irish Independent political correspondent Fiach Kelly of how a woman was wrongly told her baby was dead in her womb has won an award as 'Story of the Year'.
Mr Kelly was presented with the GSK 2010 Medical Media Award for breaking the miscarriage misdiagnosis story of young mother Melissa Redmond and his subsequent investigative follow-up.
Last night, Mr Kelly paid tribute to the Redmond family and thanked them for their bravery in going public with their story.
Mrs Redmond, from Donabate in north Dublin, was originally told by a hospital that her baby was dead in her womb. However, she saved her baby Michael's life after she sought a second opinion from her local GP.
Mr Kelly was one of 10 category winners presented with GSK Medical Media Awards at a reception in Dublin last night.
