'Incendiary' Dail query is blocked

an incendiary parliamentary question to Justice Minister Alan Shatter by independent Tipperary TD Mattie McGrath in relation to suicide among business- people who find themselves before the courts has been disallowed by Ceann Comhairle Sean Barrett.

Mr McGrath was seeking to raise the issue of people involved in commercial litigation such as bankruptcy taking their own lives.

The written question stated: "To ask the Minister for Justice and Equality if he will provide in tabular form, for the last five years, the number of cases listed before the Commercial Courts where the death of a party to a case is recorded as either being caused due to death by misadventure or suspected suicide; if he is concerned with the number of these deaths of people before the Commercial Courts; and if he will make a statement on the matter?"

Ceann Comhairle Sean Barrett wrote to Mr McGrath on February 3 saying that "with regret" he had to disallow the question.

"The minister has no official responsibility to Dail Eireann for this matter which is one for the courts," Mr Barrett said.
