In Brief: Duffy's unconventional portrait of the artist as a celebrity sells out

Gavin Duffy's fundraising lecture on John Lavery this Thursday at the Highlanes Gallery, Drogheda, has sold out.

Gavin presents the case that Lavery and his wife, Hazel, were the world's first "celebrity couple". Like all celebrities, rumours abounded about them. Did Lady Lavery have an affair with Michael Collins? Did Sir John, to avoid scandal, abandon his pregnant sister who later took her own life? What is undisputed is that Lavery was the most sought after portrait painter of the 20th Century. The RTE Dragon will major on the story of Lavery's works, from painting Queen Victoria in 1888 to child star Shirley Temple in 1936.
