A woman who was raising funds for the Dublin Rape Crisis centre claims she was told "you should be so lucky to be raped" while on the job yesterday.
In an impassioned Facebook post, Anne Doyle (26) described an incident where she was raising funds outside Rathfarnham Shopping Centre when an elderly man made these comments.
She wrote: "Today I was fundraising for the Dublin Rape Crisis Centre's annual flag day outside Rathfarnham Shopping Centre.
"An elderly man came up to me, shook my basket and said 'a pretty girl like you? You should be so lucky to be raped, I bet the boys are queuing up to rape you'."
The actress signed off the post by adding: "Ladies and gentlemen, [that] is why we need feminism."
Speaking to Independent.ie, Anne said that she didn't think the man meant any harm and insisted he was just ignorant.
She said: "I don't think he meant it to be malicious, he was just a bit of an idiot. I was really shocked.
"It wouldn’t be exaggerating to say I was quite upset. I just thought to myself, is this how older people see rape victims?"
The Dublin Rape Crisis Centre has been contacted for comment.
