The happy pair, who wish to remain anonymous, raised a glass to their lucky €10 Quick Pick and joked how they nearly missed out on the prize altogether.

“My wife was busy last Saturday and asked me to pick up a few things from the shops, including our weekly Lotto ticket,” said one of the winners.

“Of course, I very nearly forgot all about it and only remembered in the nick of time. I can’t believe we came so close to missing out on this amazing prize.

“I reckon my wife would’ve divorced me for sheer stupidity,” they laughed.

The married couple, who have been playing Lotto for over 15 years, said they had not made any definite plans for how to spend their winnings but are looking forward to a worry-free Christmas.

The €10 Quick Pick ticket for the Lotto Plus 2 draw was purchased in Noel McGowan’s Spar in Kinlough last Saturday.

Martina McGowan of McGowan’s Spar said everyone in the area was “very excited”.

“We are hoping that it would be someone local, preferably a young couple that could maybe do with the money to pay off their mortgage. It's a great boost for the area regardless,” she said.

This Saturday’s Lotto jackpot has been rolling since Saturday 3 October 2015 and is now an estimated €4 million.
