A Dublin man was on top of the world when his girlfriend said 'I will' high in the Himalayas.
"I caught her completely off guard with the engagement ring. She thought I was going to give her a birthday present," said the delighted Dundrum man.
But champagne was out of the question for David and Mairead as alcohol is not recommended when trekking at such high altitudes.
They were participating in a fundraising trek in Nepal for Irish charity Suas, which provides education for impoverished children in India and Kenya. The couple were part of a group from Ireland that raised €11,500.
David proposed to Mairead, a native of Newry, Co Down, with a blue sapphire and diamond ring. David, who works for Toyota Ireland, told the Herald he was thrilled when Mairead, an auditor, said "yes".
The couple had trained for the trek for several months on the slopes of Slieve Donard in the Mourne Mountains.
They will hold their wedding at the Slieve Donard Hotel next August.
