A third person, a woman, was taken to hospital. A man and woman in the second car were also rushed to hospital.

The dead couple are believed to be from Co Tipperary.

Gardai appealed to any witnesses to the crash to contact Kilkenny garda station on 056 7775000, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111 or any garda station.
