The three-year-old daughter of Waterford hurler Ken McGrath was recovering in hospital yesterday after being bitten by a dog at the weekend.

It is understood she was rushed to Cork Regional Hospital on Saturday after the accident but is now comfortable.

A Waterford county board source told the Irish Independent: "We have just got word that she's okay."

Mr McGrath was given a garda escort out of Dublin city to speed up his trip to Cork to visit his daughter following Waterford's defeat by Tipperary yesterday at the All-Ireland Hurling semi-final in Croke Park.

Waterford manager Davy Fitzgerald said that, at the request of the family, Mr McGrath had not been told about the accident before the match.

"We would have had no problem if he wanted to get back for that, that wasn't a problem with us, that was their decision and that was the way they wanted it.

"I still am passionate about it (hurling) but your health and your family is the most important thing and a few things come into perspective when you look at today," he added.

"This was a hurling match, there are a lot more important things in life."
