The woman, in her 20s, was walking alone when she was set upon at the junction of Thomas Hynes Road and Cherry Park, close to Newcastle in Galway city.

She was assaulted from behind as she walked home between 1am and 2am early yesterday.

The victim managed to raise the alarm immediately and was rushed to hospital. She received serious but not life-threatening injuries and was recovering yesterday at Galway University Hospital.

Gardai were waiting for an opportunity to fully interview her and declined to give details of the assault for operational reasons, nor could they give a description of the attacker.

A spokesman said: "This was a very serious assault on a young woman and we are very anxious to talk to anyone who may have been in the vicinity of the Thomas Hynes Road or Cherry Park from midnight and who may have noticed anything unusual."

Anyone with information should contact gardai in Galway at 091-538000.
