Hunt stepped up for pair who stabbed garda

GARDAI have extended their hunt for two burglars who seriously injured a community police officer when he tackled them after they broke into his own home.

Doctors are still fighting to save the sight in one of the 27-year-old garda's eyes after he was slashed across the face with a Stanley knife.

He also sustained a punctured lung when he was stabbed with a screwdriver. The savage attack took place at the house in Tallaght on Saturday morning.

The burglars initially took the garda's car keys but when they failed to start the car, they returned to the house and slashed him because he was making a telephone call for help.

Garda Commissioner Martin Callinan condemned the attack and said every effort was being made to bring the culprits to justice.

He disclosed that the garda's condition in hospital had improved.
