Humanitarian award backers seek nominees
A humanitarian competition named in honour of a priest who helped save the lives of 6,500 people during World War Two is seeking nominations.
The 6th Annual Hugh O'Flaherty International Humanitarian Award will be presented in Killarney later this year.
Monsignor O'Flaherty helped save more than 6,500 prisoners of war and Jews from arrest and death during the Nazi occupation by hiding them in safe houses.
The award will be presented at an event marking the 50th anniversary of Msgr O'Flaherty's death, running from October 27 to November 3.
"We feel that at this particularly difficult time it is most appropriate to include those involved in the enormous humanitarian work at home in Ireland and not just overseas," organisers said.
