HSE orders an audit of all its hospitals in wake of debacle

THE Health Service Executive is to ask all of its hospitals to check whether they are failing to properly check X-rays, writes Edel Kennedy. It ordered the audit after it was found that thousands of X-rays were lying unchecked in Tallaght Hospital.
But not a single hospital was able to confirm last night that all its X-rays were being properly checked by a radiologist.
Each HSE region said they would be unable to answer any questions and hoped they would have further details from the individual hospitals later today.
Dr Barry White, HSE National Director of Quality and Clinical Care, has said that until that audit was completed, the Executive could not provide reassurance to patients.
He was speaking after a meeting with Tallaght Hospital management and doctors on the controversy.
Dr White said the review of the remaining 23,000 X-rays at Tallaght could not be completed any faster than the May timescale already indicated.
