A community is mourning the loss of a young boy who was crushed to death by a tractor.

Jamie Toner (11) was on his summer break from Stratmore National School at Gledowan, near Churchill, Co Donegal. He was helping out on his uncle's farm at Glenvar, Kerrykeel, when the tragedy happened on Saturday.

The Health and Safety Authority (HSA) has launched a full investigation into how Jamie became trapped underneath a tractor on the farm.

He was rushed to Letterkenny General Hospital where surgeons battled to save his life, but he died a short time later.

Heartbroken

Last night, Jamie's heartbroken parents, Roisin and James, and older sister Lynn, from Cruckraw, Churchill, were being comforted by family and friends.

Local priest Fr Michael Mc-Keever, of St Colmcille's Church, where prayers were offered for young Jamie yesterday morning, said everyone in the community was just numb at his sudden loss.

Locals took it in turn to sympathise with relatives of little Jamie who gathered at Mass yesterday morning. Funeral details have yet to be announced.

A spokesperson for the board of management at the small school said they were devastated by Jamie's death.

"He was a bright and popular lad and never caused his teachers one minute of bother," the spokesperson said.
