How you can save money on your energy bills

HOW YOU CAN SAVE MONEY

Q Turn down the thermostat -- if it's above 20C, turn it down. Lowering by just 1C can knock 10pc off your bill. Q Turn off the lights.

Q Close doors to separate heated and unheated areas. Don't heat unused rooms.

Q Heat is lost through windows. Keep curtains closed at night, even in empty rooms. Don't let them hang over radiators as heat is funnelled through windows.

Q Switch appliances off, rather than leaving them on standby. This will save up to 20pc of your appliances' energy use.

Q Use energy efficient light bulbs where possible. While more expensive, they use less energy and last up to 10 times longer.

Q Buy efficient appliances -- an

'A'-rated appliance uses less energy, and the extra costs are recouped through electricity savings.

Q Install insulation and upgrade your heating system. Grants are available, and insulating walls and attics could save up to 40pc on your heating bills.
