A JUDICIAL vacancy arises and is advertised in Iris Oifigiuil and solicitors with at least seven years' experience apply to the Judicial Appointments Advisory Board (JAAB).
Candidates are told they cannot lobby for judicial office, but there is no ban on public representatives or others lobbying government ministers for preferred candidates.
The JAAB provides the Government with a list of seven suitable candidates.
But the ultimate decision is made by the Cabinet. The new judge is formally appointed by the president on the advice of the Government.
