How to stay safe during chill

Householders should conserve water so supplies are not cut off over the Christmas period. Pedestrians should wear sensible footwear and keep their hands out of their pockets while walking. People walking alone should carry a mobile phone with them in case they get into difficulty.

But do not use it while walking.

  • Pedestrians should not walk on roads, even if they have been treated, as cars take longer to stop in icy conditions.
  • People who intend to travel during the Christmas period should plan their journey well in advance. Roads are dangerous, so allow extra time and carry a charged mobile phone and blankets in case of difficulties.
  • Check elderly neighbours -- don't assume others have done so.
