GOING, going, gone.

Dublin Lord Mayor Naoise O Muiri experienced the tumultuous life of a politician yesterday as he received a knock-out from two future voters.

He was taking part in festivities for National Play Day in the capital's Merrion Square Park when he met his match in Calum Rochford (7), from the Navan Road, and Keyleigh Ryan (8), from Clonshaugh, on a giant log.

After bravely hanging on for as long as possible, the first citizen was soon sent tumbling -- but not before he took his young opponents with him.

The event was part of a countrywide National Play Day, which encouraged children to abandon computer games and television and get outside.

Fine Gael TD and former school principal Mary Mitchell O'Connor said: "These days, children are living increasingly sedentary lives."

She encouraged parents to play the games with their children that they used to when they were young.
