•The new punishment system for drink drivers will be rolled out next month when limit is cut from 80mg to 50mg per 100ml of blood.

•Drivers with a reading of between 50 and 80mg will get three penalty points and an on-the-spot fine of €200, but avoid a court summons, conviction and driving ban.

•This lower penalty regime applies only once in a three-year period. If caught a second time, they will have to go to court.

•Drivers with between 80mg and 100mg will get a conviction, an on-the-spot fine of €400 and a six-month ban. Under the current system, the ban would be 12 months.

•Drivers above 100mg will appear in court where they face a minimum one-year ban, a conviction, and a fine of up to €5,000.
