FORTY-three small and mid-sized towns meet the criteria for areas where Catholic schools could be handed over to other patron bodies. The following criteria were applied in selecting the initial locations where a change of patronage may be warranted in places outside of Dublin, Cork, Galway, Limerick and Waterford:
- Areas with a population of greater than 5,000 and less than 20,000, as per the 2006 Census.
- Areas that did not experience greater than 20pc growth in the inter-censal period 2002-2006 and where the establishment of new schools is unlikely to emerge until at least 2016.
- Areas that have at least three primary schools within a 2km range of the CSO Town Boundary.
- Areas where school provision is predominantly Catholic or where there is very limited diversity of provision at present.
