Hotelier celebrates landmark

The County Arms Hotel in Birr, Co Offaly, was the scene of a memorable family occasion as hotel founder Margaret Loughnane celebrated her 100th birthday.

Madge, as she is universally known, was joined by four generations of the Loughnane family and close friends.

After Mass, guests enjoyed an elaborate buffet supervised by her grandsons Barry and Conor Loughnane.

The star turn went to the birthday girl herself, whose rendition of Paddy McGinty's Goat drew a standing ovation

Many stories were recounted of Civil and World Wars, rural electrification and the burning of the barracks in Crinkle in 1922.

The County Arms Hotel celebrates its 50th birthday this year having been founded by Michael and Margaret Loughnane in 1962. It is now owned and run by Willie and Gene Loughnane and their family.
