Hotel staff end 52-day sit-in as deal struck

A SIT-IN lasting 52 days by hotel staff, who lost their jobs when the business closed unexpectedly, has ended.

Some 45 former staff of the Old Darnley Lodge in Athboy, Co Meath, have ended their protest – after staging the sit-in to ensure they received their statutory entitlements, including redundancy pay.

The hotel closed suddenly at 10pm on January 16. Staff subsequently began a roster to maintain a presence there.

"We were sitting in until we got our rights (met)... This week the last ones were paid," said Gary Quigley, who worked there for 10 years.

SIPTU's Martin Mannion said: "It shows the resolve of the staff that they were willing to fight for what they're entitled to."
