Horror ordeal of pensioner (84) beaten in his home by young thug who fled empty-handed
AN 84-YEAR-OLD West Sligo pensioner feared for his life when he was set upon by a thug who came to his remote home in a hunt for money.
Retired farmer Michael Keane was left beaten and battered and needed stitches after the cowardly attack by the lone raider, who ultimately fled empty-handed as he could not find any cash in the house near Castle connor.
Gardai are continuing to hunt for the culprit and are seeking the assistance of the public in tracking him down.
"He kept roaring that he would f..king kill me, and I believed he would. I was terrified," Michael told The Sligo Champion.
His terrifying ordeal began when he answered a knock to his front door at about 9.30pm last Friday night.
"As soon as I answered the door, this thug stormed past me. He punched me to the ground, kicked me in the chest and jumped on top of me. He pinned me down and was roaring 'get the f..king money'. He was screaming that he would f..king kill me, and I was sure he would," Michael recalled.
The raider, said to be in his 20's, and who was wearing a peaked cap and scarf pulled up around his face, was carrying a weapon which Michael described as 'a round ball on the end of a stick', with which he beat the defenceless pensioner.
He ransacked the small house, turning over kitchen and bedroom furniture, and tearing through Michael's wardrobe in the search for cash.
"I was lying on the ground, unable to get up and I could hear him ransacking the house, turning over all the furniture and going through my clothes, all the time screaming and shouting." Michael reports.
After a futile 15 minute search of the house, the raider fled empty-handed. A shorttime later, a badly shaken Michael made his way to a neighbour's house where the alarm was raised.
Gardai in Ballymote, who are investigating the crime, want to hear from anybody who was in the Quay Road area linking Enniscrone and Ballina between the hours of 8 p.m. and 10 p.m. on Friday night.
The gardai describe the man they are looking for as being in his 20's, of slim build and about 5'8" tall. He was wearing dark clothing and a baseball hat.
