HOPES were fading last night for a father of one who went missing on a lake yesterday morning.

A massive search got underway for Neilus O'Connor (38), of Cromane, Co Kerry, who was reported missing by his partner Melissa when he failed to return home from kayaking on nearby White Sands Lake at around 8am.

Last night Mr O'Connor's partner, his mother Noeleen, sister Jacqueline, relatives and friends waited for news as the search continued.

Originally from Tralee, Mr O'Connor had moved to Cromane outside Killorglin with his partner.

The couple had only recently celebrated the birth of their daughter, Hannah, who was born 10 weeks ago.

When the alarm was raised the Shannon Coast Guard helicopter was immediately launched, as well as the Knightstown Coast Guard and the search-and-rescue unit from the Ballinskelligs inshore rescue team.

Local volunteers, including Kerry footballer Donnacha Walsh, also took part in the search.

An overturned kayak was found on the lake at around 11am yesterday.
