Honours for rights champion and philosopher at Maynooth

Children's rights campaigner Emily Logan and philosopher William Desmond were conferred with honorary doctorates as 1,500 students graduated from Maynooth University.

Ms Logan, Ireland's first Chief Commissioner of the Irish Human Rights and Equality Commission, received the Degree of Doctor of Laws (LLD) while Prof Desmond received the Degree of Doctor of Literature (DLitt).

"William Desmond has made a valuable contribution to scholarship and philosophy. He has been a flag-bearer for Irish thought on the international stage," said Maynooth University President, Prof Philip Nolan.

"Emily Logan, throughout her career, has furthered the causes of the most vulnerable in society."
