The package, which apparently had wires visible from it, was discovered near Shannon Lawn in the Mayfield area of Cork city shortly after 4am.

Gardaí notified the Defences Forces and they dispatched the Collins Barracks-based Explosive & Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team.

A number of homes were cordoned off and traffic to the area was restricted for a number of hours.

For a time, a number of homes located close to where the device was found had to be evacuated as a precautionary measure.

However, the EOD team managed to deal with the suspicious item and full access to the area was restored around 8am.

The discovery of the suspicious device is the latest in a number of such incidents in various parts of Cork's northside over recent months.

GardaÍ have appealed for anyone who may have spotted suspicious activity in the area over the past 24 hours to contact them.

A detailed forensic examination of the device will now be carried out for clues as to who left it there.
