PENSIONERS and disabled people unable to work on home improvements are availing of a unique service where all repair jobs are taken care of completely free of charge, writes Barry Duggan.
A pilot project in the mid-east region, the Limerick City Care and Repair service, is already proving to be a major success.
The project helps elderly people over 65 and people of all ages with disabilities to continue living independently at home.
All small repair jobs are undertaken by volunteers at no cost to the homeowner.
Project development worker Mick Brown said there had been great interest in the service since it began on November 1 last year.
"Examples of services provided include gardening, changing plugs, fuses and light bulbs and installing smoke alarms," he said.
