Historic chairs fetch record €80,000 at sale
A PAIR of historic Chinese ceremonial chairs were bought for a record €80,000 at an Irish auction by a collector bidding online from Beijing.
Hundreds were watching over the internet, more than a dozen were on the telephone and others were furiously bidding in Sheppard's Auction Rooms in Durrow, Co Laois.
The Dublin-based sellers of the 18th/19th Century chairs, made from Huanghuali wood and known as 'Grand Tutor' chairs, or 'taishi yi' in Chinese, were understood to have collected the items when they were working in the Far East.
"They were a real symbol of status," auctioneer and historian, Phillip Sheppard, explained.
