Higgins to give emigrants a voice on his Council of State
He was the only presidential candidate to visit the UK during the race for the Aras and now President Michael D Higgins has promised to give emigrants a voice of their own when he appoints his Council of State.
Critics say the appointment of a representative from the emigrant community to the advisory body is no more than a tokenistic gesture, but others see it as a major breakthrough.
Mr Higgins will name the adviser -- who's based overseas -- in the coming weeks and the likelihood is that he or she will travel from London.
Taoiseach Enda Kenny, Tanaiste Eamon Gilmore and Supreme Court Chief Justice Susan Denham are automatic members of the Council of State, as are the four former Taoisigh, Bertie Ahern, Brian Cowen, John Bruton and Liam Cosgrave.
