Higgins leads new left group in election bid

A NEW umbrella group of left wing candidates led by Socialist Party MEP Joe Higgins is to field up to 20 candidates in the general election.

The new 'United Left Alliance' draws together Socialist Party candidates with left leaning independents and workers' groups, as well as the People Before Profit Alliance.

Declan Bree, a former Labour TD, has joined the group and will run in the Sligo-North Leitrim constituency. Councillor Richard Boyd-Barrett, who narrowly missed out on a Dail seat in Dun Laoghaire in 2007, will also run

Former independent TD Seamus Healy, a councillor and a member of the Clonmel-based Workers and Unemployed Action Group, is hoping to take back the Tipperary South Dail seat he lost in 2007.

Mr Higgins will also be hoping to regain the seat he lost in Dublin West and Cllr Clare Daly will be running in Dublin North. Cllr Mick Barry will also be running in Cork North-Central.
