Higgins hires anti-war protester
PRESIDENT Michael D Higgins has hired an anti-war protester as his special adviser, writes Fiach Kelly.
Mary Van Lieshout is a former humanitarian aid worker and was a member of a number of organisations such as US Citizens in Ireland for Alternatives to War, which was against the war in Iraq.
She also worked with Oxfam Ireland for almost 10 years before going on to be health promotion officer with the former Eastern Health Board.
Since 2002, she has been head of research and standards development with the National Disability Authority. Aras an Uachtarain could not provide details of her salary last night.
Wally Young, who was the main media adviser to Mary McAleese when she was president, will stay on in the position to advise President Higgins.
