HeterosexuaIs main HIV risk

HIV is now being mainly transmitted in Ireland through heterosexual contact, a conference was told yesterday. Dr Mary Codd, a clinical epidemiologist, said a study shows that of 1,782 patients, 47pc were infected through heterosexual contact.

Another 24pc were infected through drug use and 25pc through male gay sex.

The patients were part of the Dublin HIV cohort study from Beaumont, the Mater and St James's Hospitals.
