The fully uniformed officer risked his life and followed the man into the River Slaney in Enniscorthy after the individual struggled to stay afloat in the strong moving tide on Wednesday  afternoon.

The man, who is believed to be connected to a number of robberies and assaults in the town tried to evade arrest by jumping from the Railway Bridge into the gushing waters below.

The garda bravely followed, and the man was arrested when both were safely positioned on the banks of the river.

He was taken to Enniscorthy Garda Station where he is currently being detained.
