Hector, meet hairy Hector -- your new top dog
RTE broadcaster Hector O hEochagain was upstaged live on air by his namesake yesterday when Hector the puppy took over the Galway studio from which the show is broadcast.
The three-month-old labrador-cross, who is beginning his training as a guide dog, has been adopted by the 2fm breakfast show and they need to raise €38,000 for his schooling.
Asked what he thought of his doppelganger, O hEochagain quipped: "Well, he's almost as good looking as I am!"
The canine Hector is one of 10 puppies born in October who are being trained to become guide dogs for a person who is blind or vision-impaired. Some of the pups may also be trained to work as assistance dogs for families of children with autism.
O hEochagain said that the Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind charity is a worthy recipient of assistance from the show. "Adopting pup Hector is such a great way for us to get involved and help one of Ireland's most valued charities," the popular Navan native said. "Hector has a great future ahead of him and we want to help him succeed."
With such a worthy cause, O hEochagain is hoping that the show's listeners will respond generously to the sponsorship drive. And the chief executive of Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind, Padraig Mallon said: "Hector's show has the perfect blend of fun and optimism and his audience has certainly taken to our cause."
