RTÉ broadcaster Keelin Shanley was joined by Jessica (7) and Tom (9) Cassidy, from Longwood in Co Meath, to launch Cystic Fibrosis National Awareness Week.

Jessica and Tom both have Cystic Fibrosis (CF). Their mother Michelle Cassidy said it was during a check for asthma at the age of two years that CF was identified in Tom.

At the time, she was pregnant with Jessica, and when she was born, tests also found that she had CF.

Michelle hopes to raise awareness to build a brighter future for her children.

Approval

Cystic Fibrosis Ireland is calling on the Government to conclude its discussions with drug manufacturer Vertex Pharmaceuticals, and to give swift approval for the Orkambi therapy.

Cystic Fibrosis National Awareness Week will run from April 10 to 16.

Latest figures show 1,219 people in Ireland have Cystic Fibrosis.
