The EU's top court has given the go ahead for the introduction of plain packaging on cigarette packets sold in Ireland from this summer.
It dismissed objections from the tobacco industry to the life saving measure.
The ruling was handed down by the European Court of Justice this morning.
The packets will also contain warnings on the dangers of smoking.
Branding will be removed from cigarette packets and warnings can be spread over two thirds of the box.
Around one in five people in Ireland still smokes but the rate is higher in deprived areas.
