IRISH people should embrace their Celtic complexions and realise that "pale is beautiful", Health Minister Leo Varadkar has said.
The minister, who was discussing the banning of the use of sunbeds by people under 18 from Monday, said the warning on the dangers of skin cancer also applied to those sunning themselves outdoors this summer.
He said: "850 people are diagnosed with severe skin cancer every year and 150 die. Like a lot of illnesses and diseases it can be avoided or improved with lifestyle changes."
He said: "Some people believe pale skin is not healthy skin – that is not true.To be pale is beautiful. Don't feel you need to give yourself a tan and as a result give yourself skin cancer in the long run."
He added that the ban on use of sunbeds by young people would not solve the skin cancer problem on its own, but we could achieve our goal if we work together and raise awareness.
