Health Minister Simon Harris and hospital chiefs witnessed the start of the preparation of the site at the campus of St James's Hospital in advance of the next step which will involve the laying of foundations and the long-awaited sight of bricks and mortar.

John Pollock, project director for the hospital development board, said it will be one of the finest children's hospitals in the world when it opens its doors in 2020. The minister said bringing the three children's hospitals together under one roof will lead to better outcomes.

He also said yesterday marked a key step in making the vision a reality.
