INMO: Tomorrow's nurses' strike is off

THE INMO says tomorrow's planned nurses strike is off - deferred pending members balloting on new set of proposals.
It is understood the industrial action is postponed to January 12, which will give members an opportunity to ballot on a new set of proposals.
The action was due to see rolling two-hour stoppages by nurses tomorrow in the A&E departments of seven hospitals between 8am and 4pm.
Although nurses in other parts of the hospitals were continue to work as normal, services were being scaled down for safety reasons - and it is understood that a large number of medical procedures have already been cancelled.
The Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation (INMO) says members are protesting at overcrowding and the failure by employers to meet a series of payment demands, which nurses insist are essential to recruit and retain staff.
"There has been a significant number of offers put on the table so it is a big decision to make," an INMO source said tonight.
"So this decision is up to us members to make hence why it is postponed. There has been a ballot now amongst members to see if there is enough being offered."
