THE HSE could face legal action from staff after a secret CCTV camera was found in a hospital.

It confirmed that an internal inquiry is under way at Letterkenny General Hospital after a whistleblower claimed staff in the maintenance section were unaware of the camera, found on March 25.

The hospital insisted staff were aware of the camera. But the HSE could be in breach of privacy by not installing surveillance notices.

"The staff who work in the office were aware of its presence as they had concerns about access to the office," said a hospital spokesman. "The Hospital Group has grievance procedures in place and management at Letterkenny General Hospital are available to support any staff who have raised concerns."

Hospital manager Sean Murphy insisted the camera was not used to cover an area where staff changed clothes, but on an office used by maintenance.

He said he was due to receive a report on the affair shortly.

Donegal TD Padraig Mac Lochlainn has tabled a question in the Dail on the matter.
