An expert panel has been appointed by the HSE that will examine what medical needs should be taken into account for medical card eligibility.
The panel will examine and recommend the range of medical conditions that should be considered when determining medical card eligibility, as well as list them in priority order of what would benefit most from a medical card.
Professor Frank Keane, past President of the Royal College of Surgeons Ireland and Clinical Lead, will chair the panel that will be made up of a range of clinical experts from primary care, specialist services and therapies.
The range of medical professionals will have the expertise to consider the broad range of chronic, life-long and life-limiting conditions that will be brought before the panel.
There will also be a patient representative to ensure the views of patients are central to the process.
The panel will report to the Director General of the Health Service by September 2014.
A public consultation will commence tomorrow to seek the views of the public.
